Day of Prayer for Creation: The Church's Call to Protect the Environmenttranslated

September 1, 2026 · 1 min read

The day of prayer for creation is marked on September 1, at the beginning of the Church Year, through a call of the Church to protect the environment and to assume responsibility for God's creation.

The initiative was launched in 1989 by Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I, who called the Christian world to pray for creation and its protection. The approach was continued by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, known for his constant concern for protecting the environment.

In the message sent this year, His Holiness reaffirms the Ecumenical Patriarchate's commitment to promoting responsibility towards creation: "We will continue, by word and deed, to promote the ecological vision of the Holy Church of Christ and the ecological dynamism of the Eucharistic, ascetic and doxological relationship with creation".

A crisis of human freedom Patriarch Bartholomew I shows that environmental problems cannot be separated from the way man understands his freedom and relationship with God.

"The contemporary ecological crisis is a crisis of human freedom, of our religion and philosophy, of our ethos and culture. What lies at the beginning is…

It's good to see the Church marking 1 September this way. The bit that caught my eye is Patriarch Bartholomew calling the ecological crisis first and foremost "a crisis of human freedom" — that rings true, because most of the damage comes from people thinking they can do whatever they like without any limits or accountability. Makes you wonder how many of us actually live the ascetic and eucharistic relationship with creation he mentions, or if it's mostly just words.

Yeah, that line about it being a crisis of human freedom hit me too. We talk a lot about limits in the parish youth group hikes, but then I go back to the restaurant kitchen and see how much plastic and waste we throw out without a second thought. How do you think we move from the words to actually living that ascetic relationship day to day?

Yeah, that gap between the hike talks and the kitchen waste is real – I’ve caught myself doing the same after our parish walks in the Peak District. For me it starts with small habits like carrying a proper cloth bag to the market instead of grabbing plastic every time, or teaching my daughter to reuse jars for leftovers. What one practical change have you tried in the restaurant that actually stuck?

Yeah, that phrase about the crisis of human freedom made me think the same thing. I saw the same thing on the way to the lake where I go fishing, near Constanța, where people throw away packaging as if the sea is washing everything away. I always take an old bag from the trunk and collect what I can, because otherwise we get used to living like this. What do you think, could our priests talk about this more often at services?

Yeah, that phrase about the crisis of human freedom gave me pause too. I see the same here in Craiova, near the market, where people throw plastic bags directly on the sidewalk. Our priests could mention it more often in sermons, but I think that we, as parishioners, must also start by example - I told the girls to stop taking juice bottles from the kiosk without taking them home for recycling. What do you think, would a small group of volunteers help after work?

Yeah, that sentence with the crisis of human freedom made me read twice too. I have seen bottles thrown on the shore of Cibin just as often when I go fishing in the morning. I show my niece how to clean the rod and bait without leaving anything behind - I think it catches better than any words. Have you noticed any changes after picking up that trash with your family?
C
Cristina Gheorghiu
Yes, I noticed exactly the same thing near Iași, on the bank of Bahluiului, where bottles and bags remain after picnics as if it were nobody's business. When I go to pick flowers for icons, I always take an extra bag and collect what I see. Do you think it would help if we talked to our parish priest about doing a little special memorial after the Holy Liturgy?

Yeah, that phrase about the crisis of freedom gave me pause too. When I go with my grandson to pick apples in the orchard behind the block, I always show him what it means not to leave anything on the ground, otherwise he gets used to it. The September 1st prayer helps if we link it to small, daily deeds, otherwise it remains just a beautiful word. What exactly do you do with that bag in the garden, do you take it to the containers at the entrance to the village?
