WCC calls for calm and dialogue in Ethiopia

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed deep concern about the renewed escalation of hostilities in Tigray and neighbouring areas of northern Ethiopia.

“ The resurgence of fighting is creating renewed fear and uncertainty among communities and risks deepening an already serious humanitarian situation, ” he said. “ The WCC recalls the historic Pretoria Agreement of November 2022, which brought an end to the devastating conflict and gave the people of Ethiopia renewed hope for peace. ”

Pillay urged all parties to uphold the spirit and commitments of the agreement and to refrain from further military escalation.

“ The WCC calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, maximum restraint, and the resumption of direct dialogue and negotiations, ” he said. “ The protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access must remain the highest priority. ”

The people of Ethiopia, who have suffered so much, deserve peace and security, Pillay added.
