Vatican denies Marko Rupnik has been acquitted

July 22, 2026 · 1 min read

The Vatican on July 22 denied reports circulating on blogs and social media that Father Marko Rupnik, the former Jesuit accused by several women religious of sexual abuse, had been acquitted.

Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, described reports that the judges overseeing the case had reached a final decision as “absolutely unfounded.”

Bruni said the canonical proceedings remain underway and that the tribunal “is examining documentation received from the dioceses involved, the Society of Jesus, the interested parties, and information published by the media.”

Proceedings remain confidential The Vatican spokesman stressed that no information about the case can be made public while the trial is underway. He said the confidentiality is intended both to protect due process and to prevent further harm to those affected by the case.

“During the trial, as in any judicial proceeding, information regarding the proceedings underway cannot be shared in any way,” Bruni said in the statement.

He added that the tribunal itself will take any necessary steps to obtain additional information should the judges determine that further evidence is required.

It's good that the Vatican came out with an official denial. These blog rumors only confuse people and harm the victims. Let the process go quietly, as Bruni says, and let all the documents from the dioceses and the Jesuits be collected.

It's a good thing the Vatican immediately came out with this rebuttal, otherwise the rumors would have spread even more. Bruni made it clear that they are still collecting documents from the dioceses, the Jesuits and from the victims themselves, so let the process go smoothly. Only in this way can the truth be understood without harming anyone.

It's good that the Vatican immediately denied these blog rumors. Bruni directly said that the process is still ongoing and they are collecting papers from the dioceses, the Jesuits and from the victims themselves, so let them sort it out calmly, without noise. This is the only way to get to the truth.

I agree, George, it's good that the Vatican immediately refuted these rumors. I personally think that if things are blown up in the media before all the documents from the dioceses and the Jesuits have been collected, it only confuses everything. Let the process go as it should, without noise.

I agree Cyril, good that the Vatican quickly denied these rumors. I also think that if the media starts pulling various "documents" before they are ready, they only hinder the process. Let them collect everything from the dioceses and from the Jesuits in peace.

I agree, Tsvetanka, good thing they denied right away. I just wonder if they will ask for more testimonies from Slovenia, because there are probably more women there who spoke years ago. Let the process proceed as it should without interfering.

Yes, Crasimira, it's good that the Vatican reacted quickly and denied the rumours. I wonder if they will also include those older testimonies from Slovenia, as you say - maybe they already got them through the media. Let's wait without guessing.
