He graduated from the Gatchina Imperial Nicholas Institute. In September 1891, he entered the Nilova Hermitage as a novice in the Tver province and 2 years later became a monk. In 1896 he was ordained hieromonk. Subsequently, Father Sergius bore the obedience of the treasurer of the Novotorzhsky Boris and Gleb Monastery.
