UNESCO has released a report on the impact of journalism on the economy and societytranslated

UNESCO published the report The Value of Journalism, which highlights the contribution of independent journalism to economic development, strengthening national security and increasing the adaptive capacity of society in the face of disinformation and crises.

The report was launched on Wednesday at the Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany. The paper, by Professor Mel Bunce and Dr Beth Pearson of City St George's, University of London, summarizes the latest research on the role of journalism in the economy, security and crisis management and argues for increased investment in the independent press.

Among the report's conclusions is that every dollar invested in journalism can generate up to $10 in public benefits by reducing fraud, improving public services and increasing the accountability of institutions.

Also, a study of 152 countries found that greater access to free media is associated with a reduction in human rights violations and a lower likelihood of conflict and repression.

This report is interesting, especially the figure of one dollar invested which can yield ten in public benefits. But I wonder if these studies really take into account small local newspapers like those we read in the parish, not just the big media. In Bonn they launched this, I hope it will help real independent voices and not just big budgets.
