Sobriety is a blessingtranslated

September 10, 2026 · 1 min read

This event has its roots in the life of the one whom Christ called greater than all those born of women - Saint John the Baptist, the Baptist of the Lord. On September 11, the Beheading of the Great Prophet John the Baptist by order of King Herod is remembered and a strict church fast is established - as a reminder that John the Baptist was deprived of his life during a drunken feast. In 1913, at the initiative of the Church, the All-Russian Day of Sobriety was established. After 1917, Temperance Day fell into oblivion - in fact, what kind of sobriety in the country of victorious revelry... Since 2005, the tradition began to be resumed, again, on the initiative of the Church, and since 2014, by decision of the Holy Synod, Temperance Day has finally restored its official status.

What is the meaning of this holiday? The main thing in the process of gaining sobriety, which many people need both in the past and in the present, is a change of mind, that very repentance that stands at the center of the spiritual life of every person. The book “Escape from the Abyss: From the Notes of a Former Drunkard” is dedicated to how this process occurs through the personal example of a specific person.
