The priests of the diocese performed a litiya in memory of the defenders of Petropavlovsktranslated

September 5, 2026 · 1 min read

The regional capital hosted ceremonial events dedicated to the 172nd anniversary of the heroic defense of the Peter and Paul port from the attack of the Anglo-French squadron.

The main celebrations took place on the territory of the monument to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and at the “Chapel” monument on Leninskaya Street. Representatives of the Legislative Assembly of the region and the leadership of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka urban district gathered here. Representatives of the clergy, law enforcement agencies, public organizations, military personnel, as well as schoolchildren and students of Kamchatka universities - those who will keep the memory of the feat of their ancestors - also came to the memorial.

With the blessing of Archbishop Theodore of Petropavlovsk and Kamchatka, at the “Chapel” monument, Archpriest Victor Muzykant, rector of the Trinity Cathedral, together with clergy of the diocese, performed a prayer service in honor of the defenders of the city, then addressed those gathered.

The laying of flowers took place on Nikolskaya Hill at the monument to the “Heroes of the III Battery, Lieutenant A.P. Maksutov" and "Glory", built in honor of the successful defense of Petropavlovsk from the attack of the Anglo-French squadron in 1854."

It’s good that Father Victor Muzykant served a prayer service right at the “Chapel” on Leninskaya. I remember standing there last year when flowers were laid at Maksutov’s battery. It is important that schoolchildren were brought in, so they could remember what their ancestors fought for.
