Support “Our Seminarians” Month has Begun — How can you help?

September 1, 2026 · 1 min read

CHICAGO, IL [DOM]  — The annual “Support Our Seminarians” month in the Diocese of the Midwest has begun with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest, who calls upon the faithful to support the diocesan seminarians.

In an effort to build awareness of our seminarians’ needs, SOS flyers are available for downloading and distribution in all parishes during the month of September. All donations from parishes as well as individuals — culminating in “SOS Sunday” on September 27 — will be distributed directly to the seminarians to offset the cost of their educational and living expenses.

Regardless of how a parish chooses to raise SOS funds, the result will help ensure that our seminarians and their families will find some measure of “relief” from increasing living and educational expenses.

Individuals are encouraged to donate through their parishes, by mailing a check to the diocese, or  online .

Our parish always puts the SOS flyers right by the candle stand so folks see them every week. I’ll drop a check in the collection on the 27th—those seminarians have enough on their plates without worrying about rent. Anyone know how many we have studying this year?

Our parish stuck the flyers up by the candle stand too, just like Hannah’s. I usually mail a cheque straight to the diocese address on the 27th so it gets there quick. Does anyone know if they’re still short on housing help this year?

Our parish did the same with the flyers near the candles. I mailed my check last year too but switched to the online option this time since it's faster. No idea on the housing situation though—anyone from the diocese office chime in?

Our parish stuck the flyers right by the candle desk too — easy spot for people to see. I mailed a check last year as well but the online option really is quicker. As for housing, I heard from a seminarian last month that the diocese is trying to line up a couple of shared apartments near the seminary to cut costs.

Our parish did the same with the flyers by the candles — good call, people actually notice them there. The shared apartments idea sounds practical; hope it works out for the guys and their families. Did the seminarian mention how many spots they might have?
