Romanian Senate president commends Patriarch Daniel’s leadership, support for Church’s mission

The President of the Romanian Senate Mircea Abrudean sent a congratulatory message to Patriarch Daniel on Wednesday, praising the Romanian Orthodox leader’s vision and describing the Church as “a source of hope” under his leadership.

In his message marking the Patriarch’s 75th birthday , Abrudean expressed the Senate’s appreciation for Patriarch Daniel’s pastoral ministry and reaffirmed his support for the Romanian Orthodox Church’s spiritual, educational and social mission.

Your Beatitude,

On the blessed occasion of Your Beatitude’s birthday, allow me, both personally and on behalf of the Senate of Romania, to extend my warmest congratulations and deepest respect, gratitude and esteem, accompanied by my prayer that the Good Lord may grant you health, peace, strength for your ministry and many years, for the benefit of the Church and of the faithful Romanian people.

I wish to express my profound admiration for the fruitful work you carry out as Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church.…

I am very glad that the President of the Senate personally praised Patriarch Danilo for the fact that the Church remains a source of hope and that it also deals with schools and social work, not only liturgy. In our country, I would like to see similar cooperation with the state.

I am glad that Abrudean mentioned those social and educational projects, here in Montenegro I would like to see similar cooperation instead of the constant talk of separation. And you, Stefan, what do you think, specifically, what should our Church do so that the state would cooperate more?

It is good that the senator directly noted the work of Patriarch Daniel with schools and social assistance, and not just with worship. Here in Rostov, too, many priests help in schools, but such open support from the authorities is almost invisible. May God bless him for many years to come.

I agree, the social and educational side is where you really see the Church stepping in — like the soup kitchens and schools our parishes run here in Pittsburgh. It keeps families together in tough times. God grant him many years.

May God give him health, I agree with you, Stefan. Here in Serbia, it would also be worth it if the state mentioned more often the concrete things that the Church does in schools and social homes, and not just appear at the glory. What would you change first in that collaboration?

I agree, Marija, these social and educational projects are exactly what the Church does best - here in Niš, we have similar cooperation with the municipality regarding soup kitchens and summer camps for children. Our Church could perhaps propose concrete joint projects, say the renovation of a school or hospital, instead of waiting for the state to lend a hand first. What do you think, would that change things in Montenegro?

I agree, Nadezhda, especially about schools and help - in Rostov they also try, but often everything is done through the bureaucracy. And here you can see that the support is calm and to the point. May God give Patriarch Daniel strength, of course.

Yeah, those soup kitchens really do make a difference. Our parish here in Wichita runs one every Wednesday afternoon and you see the same families coming back, kids doing homework at the tables while parents eat. Keeps everybody grounded. God grant him many years.
