Romanian-language class reopens in Ukraine after intervention by Romanian authorities

Romanian public broadcaster TVR reported from Cartal, in Ukraine’s Odesa region, where Romanian children were able to return to a Romanian-language school class that local Ukrainian authorities had closed just four days after the school year began.

Following intervention by Romanian authorities at the highest level, the decision was reversed, and the children were able to return to school and exercise their right to education in their mother tongue.

“We intervened in time in a crisis situation that arose unexpectedly, just a few days before the beginning of the school year. I promised the parents that I would be there with them, and I kept my promise. I would like to emphasise that we had the full support of the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this matter,” Claudiu Tătaru, Romania’s acting consul in the Odesa region, told TVR.
