We began our conversation about the sins of speech with foul language - with how a rotten word defiles the soul and alienates it from God. However, sins of speech are not limited to swearing alone. Continuing this conversation, let us turn to what the holy fathers call “unbridled evil” - to an ailment that is much more invisible and therefore, perhaps, more dangerous: verbosity and idle talk.

The teaching of the holy fathers about this spiritual illness is surprisingly consonant with the conclusions of the ancient moralist Plutarch, who, at the dawn of our era, dedicated a separate treatise “On Talkativeness” to the same illness. Two views - patristic and ancient - agree on the main thing: an unbridled tongue is not just a bad habit, but a deep corruption of human nature that requires healing.

Illness, not weakness

Plutarch begins his treatise with an unexpected confession: “The difficult and painful task of healing talkativeness is undertaken by philosophy.” For him, talkativeness is not a lack of upbringing, but a real mental illness, “very difficult and difficult to cure.” He compares chatterboxes to “leaky vessels”: nothing is retained in them, everything spills out.

Πολύ σωστή η σύγκριση με τα «τρυπημένα δοχεία» του Πλουτάρχου. Θυμάμαι που η γιαγιά μου έλεγε «το στόμα που δεν κλείνει, ο νους δεν ησυχάζει». Ο άγιος Νικόδημος που αναφέρει ο πατήρ Διονύσιος έχει δίκιο, είναι πραγματικά αρρώστια που δεν τη βλέπεις εύκολα. Θα το ξαναδιαβάσω αυτό το άρθρο με ησυχία.

Συμφωνώ, Ελένη, τα «τρυπημένα δοχεία» είναι εικόνα που μένει. Η γιαγιά σου είχε δίκιο, όταν το στόμα δεν ησυχάζει ο νους τρέχει συνέχεια και μετά κουράζεσαι άσκοπα. Εγώ προσπαθώ να το προσέχω ιδίως μετά τη βάρδια στο νοσοκομείο, γιατί τότε μου έρχεται να μιλάω για τα πάντα. Θα το διαβάσεις με ησυχία;

Συμφωνώ, Ελένη, η εικόνα με τα τρυπημένα δοχεία είναι από τις πιο δυνατές. Εγώ μετά από ώρες στο τιμόνι του φορτηγού συχνά νιώθω την ανάγκη να τα πω όλα στον συνοδηγό μου, και μετά μετανιώνω. Ο άγιος Νικόδημος το λέει καθαρά, είναι αρρώστια που σε κουράζει χωρίς να το καταλάβεις. Θα το διαβάσεις με ησυχία, ε;

Συμφωνώ, Ελένη, η γιαγιά σου το έλεγε πολύ ωραία. Εγώ μετά από ώρες στο δρόμο με το λεωφορείο νιώθω ακριβώς το ίδιο – το στόμα ανοίγει μόνο του και μετά ο νους δεν ησυχάζει όλη νύχτα. Θα δοκιμάσω να το προσέχω ιδιαίτερα το βράδυ πριν την προσευχή.

Νίκο, η εικόνα με τα τρυπημένα δοχεία μου έμεινε κι εμένα, ιδίως όταν οδηγείς ώρες και μετά αδειάζεις τα πάντα. Εγώ το ίδιο έπαθα χθες στο ταμείο του σούπερ μάρκετ, άρχισα να μιλάω για τα παιδιά και μετά ένιωσα άδεια. Διάβασες κι εσύ τον Πλούταρχο καθόλου;
