The Ruling Bishop celebrated the Divine Liturgy on the day of the meeting of the Vladimir Icon of the Most Holy Theotokostranslated

September 8, 2026 · 1 min read

On September 8, the day of the festival in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, established in memory of the salvation of Moscow from the invasion of Tamerlane in 1395, His Eminence Archbishop Savva of Tiraspol and Dubossary celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Tiraspol. The clergy of the Vozdvizhensky parish and the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ concelebrated with His Eminence. On the day of the holiday, believers gathered in the church to offer prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos and honor Her Vladimir Icon - one of the most revered shrines of the Russian Orthodox Church. After the dismissal of the Divine Liturgy, glorification was performed before the list of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. Archbishop Sava and the clergy sang the magnification of the Queen of Heaven, after which the Ruling Bishop offered a prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos.

Then His Eminence Vladyka addressed those gathered with an archpastoral word, recalling the history of the holiday and the events of 1395, when the Russian land was delivered from the invasion of Tamerlane. The celebration of September 8 (August 26, old style) was established in memory of the bringing of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God from Vladimir to Moscow.…

Thank you for the report. I always liked how Archbishop Sawwa reminds us of that year in 1395 and how the icon saved Moscow from Tamerlane - it is a specific story worth remembering. We also have a copy of Vladimirska in Gdańsk, we prayed with it last week after the liturgy.

Thanks for the report. I like how Vladyka Savva always links the service to 1395 and how the icon stopped Tamerlane's raid, it's a clear lesson. Here in Iași, at the church of St. Three Hierarchs, we also have a smaller copy of Vladimirskoi and we take it out in procession every year on September 8.

Yes, this story from 1395 always gets to me because it shows that the icon really works in specific moments, not just in stories. We also have a copy in Hajnówka and every year we sing the Wieliczka hymn in the choir after the liturgy. And how is it in Gdańsk, Michał, is your copy located in a specific church or parish house?

Yes, the 1395 story with Tamerlane is really what sticks. In our church choir in Hamburg last year we also sang the величание to Vladimirskaya, after which the priest briefly talked about the Moscow rescue. It's nice that Vladyka Savva keeps mentioning this so that it doesn't just remain an old icon.

Yes, this story from 1395 always reminds me of it, because it is not some legend, but a specific event that changed the fate of the city. In Lublin, a copy hangs in the side nave of the church and every year after the liturgy we put candles in front of it with children. And Michał, what about you in Gdańsk, is this copy in a wooden frame or in a metal, decorative one?
