The Monk Pimen the Great was born around 340 in Egypt. With his two brothers Anuvius and Paisius, he went to one of the Egyptian monasteries, where all three took monastic vows. The brothers were such strict ascetics that when their mother came to the monastery to see the children, they did not come out of their cells to see her. The mother stood and cried for a long time. Then the Monk Pimen said to her through the closed door of the cell: “If you endure a temporary separation from us, then in your future life you will see us, so we hope for God’s love for mankind!” The mother reconciled herself and returned home.
