Poet Raisa Shurganova wrote a poem about the Appearance of the Savior | Elista and Kalmyk diocesetranslated

August 18, 2026 · 1 min read

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Appearance of Christ the Savior, poetess Raisa Shurganova, laureate of the Ulan Zala national award (2018), member of the Union of Writers of Russia, wrote a poem, which she decided to share with readers of the Blagovest-Elista website. LIGHT OVER ELISTA In the city of Elista, where the steppe whispers quietly and sternly, In '46, in September, in the midst of sadness and grief, When the city froze under heavy misfortune, Suddenly a light, unearthly, alive, flashed above the church. In the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, in the holy twilight, Among the whisper of words and trembling candles, He appeared - in vestments, humble and bright, With love that heals from a thousand troubles and nights. He stood, blessing suffering and pain, And next to him was the head of John, as in the ancient legend, And in each of the twenty-six there was quiet joy, As if darkness had dissipated for a hundred thousand years. They did not scream, did not tear their clothes on their chests - A different, hidden light lit up in their souls. And suddenly they realized: even in the deepest hopelessness, there is One who will not give up, who loves through hundreds of troubles. And the memory of the miracle, like a quiet melody over the steppe, flies through the years and winds without losing warmth.

So that in a heart tired of storms and long wanderings, Hope, like a bird, regains its wings. /Shurganova Raisa/

It's strange how Raisa described that very moment in 1946, when the light appeared over the Ascension Church in the midst of all that hunger and sadness. I liked the "quiet joy" part the best of all 26 who saw it. I wonder if even today any of the elders in Elista remember that from their grandmother or grandfather.
