K. Mitsotakis in Egypt with the Sinai Monastery issue on the agendatranslated

September 7, 2026 · 1 min read

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is going to Egypt tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, where he will have a meeting with the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, with the meeting also having a strong ecclesiastical interest as the issue of the Sinai Monastery will also be on the agenda.  Report office ope.gr The Government may have kept its papers closed in the foreground on this particular issue, however, in the background there was regular communication with the Egyptian side which immediately seeks to close the issue by signing an agreement with the Monastery side, avoiding further delays that will bring about a new wave of reactions.

According to the information coming from Cairo, the Egyptian side - through the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice - seems to have submitted its proposal to the Sinaitic Brotherhood, which is now called upon to take the final decision on whether it agrees to the Cairo terms or whether it will request some modification. Despite the climate of cooperation that exists between Greece and Egypt, only the Brotherhood can decide the final terms of the agreement.

I hope the Σιναϊτική Αδελφότητα is not in a hurry and read carefully the conditions of Καΐρου before signing. Το Μοναστήρι του Σινά is very old and holy, we don't want to lose anything from its autonomy. Let's see what Μητσοτάκης will say after the meeting with Σίσι.

I hope that the brothers from Sinai will not hurry. That monastery is centuries old, with old charters, and its autonomy is all that remains untouched. Let's see what Mitsotakis says after he returns from Cairo, maybe it will clear something up.

I hope the Sinaitic Brotherhood carefully read every term they sent from the Ministry of Justice in Cairo. The monastery keeps its autonomy for centuries, there is no need to hurry with the signature. We will see what Mitsotakis will say when he returns from the meeting with Sisi.

I think that the monks of the Sinai Brotherhood should be very careful with those conditions from Cairo, especially from the Ministry of Justice. The monastery is thousands of years old and none of its autonomy should be lost with a quick signed paper. We will wait to see what Mitsotakis will say after the meeting with Sisi.
