On this day in 1821: The Fall of Tripolitsatranslated

September 23, 2026 · 1 min read

One of the top moments of the 21 Revolution, during which the strategic mind of Theodoros Kolokotronis was highlighted. From the first days of the national uprising, Kolokotronis had conceived the idea of besieging and sacking Tripolitsa (present-day Tripoli), because it held a strategic position and was the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire in the Morea. Mora-Valesi, the military commander of the Peloponnese, had his seat in Tripolitsa, with all his harem and riches, half the Turkish population of the Peloponnese lived there and it was defended by a significant number of armed forces.

In short, it was a dangerous enemy hotbed, which if not neutralized would be a constant menace to the rebellious provinces of the Peloponnese.

The blockade of Tripolitsa The strategic capture of Kolokotronis was not immediately accepted, because it presupposed an organized army, which did not exist. Kolokotronis, with persistence and persuasiveness, reversed the negative climate for his point of view among the chieftains, so in mid-April it was decided to blockade Tripolitsa in the first phase, in order to cut off all communication and supply of the city.
