The Archbishop of Cyprus will request a meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus. George to be informed about the Cyprus issue, the next steps and the expected enlarged meeting.

The Archbishop of Cyprus in statements to RIK emphasized that the Greek Cypriot side must resist a solution which will not be sustainable. His Beatitude pointed out that Cypriot Hellenism has been on the island for 35 centuries and its rights cannot be taken away. He even added that it is not maximalism to ask to stay in your place.

The Archbishop is right — after 35 centuries you don’t just walk away from your rights on the island. It’s not maximalism to say you want to stay on the land your people have lived on that long. I hope the meeting with the President leads to something realistic instead of another bad compromise.
