The Most Reverend Metropolitan of Didymoteicho, Orestia and Soufli, Mr. Damascenes, was ceremonially visited at his seat, Didymoteicho, by the Metropolitan of the Armenians in Greece, Sahak Yemisian, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, on the occasion of the feast of Shurp Kevork (Saint George), in whose name the post-Byzantine Church in the Castle of Didymoteicho. This Byzantine Church of Agios Georgios in the Castle of Didymoteicho was granted by a Sultanic firman in the 16th century to the Armenians and since then it has been owned by them to serve the liturgical needs of the Armenian Community of Didymoteicho - Orestia. The Armenian Hierarch was accompanied by the President of the Armenian Community of Didymoteicho – Orestiados Himayak (Makis) Antonian, the former President Kevork Torosyan and the vicar of the Armenian Community of Komotini, Father Daniel. The Mayor of Didymoteicho, Romylos Hatzigiannoglou, was also present at the meeting, with whom issues related to the progress of the renovation work being carried out at the Armenian Church were discussed.
