Metropolitan of Corfu: "Today, society puts us to sleep with lies"translated

September 6, 2026 · 1 min read

The Most Reverend Metropolitan of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, officiated and spoke at the Holy Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, in Kokkini, Middle Corfu on Sunday, September 6, 2026, 14th of Matthew. During the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence was flanked by the vicar of the parish, Protopresbyter Michail Dukakis, as well as his Deacons, Fr. Eusevios Pandis and Fr. Palamas Melissinos. During his speech, His Holiness referred to the Gospel passage of the day and the parable of the royal dinner, pointing out that the Lord presented many times the Kingdom of Heaven as a dinner, as a table around which all people are invited, to rejoice, rejoice and be filled spiritually. The invitees, however, did not respond to the king's invitation, each presenting his own excuse.

In our parish, I often see the same thing: people say they don't have time for the Sunday Liturgy because they have some "more important" obligations, but it's actually just excuses. Just like in the parable the Metropolitan referenced. Thank him for reminding us again that the modern world lulls us with lies about what is truly important.

It's the same with us, Katarina. People keep saying "I don't have time, work, the kids, fishing on Sunday"... and then they wonder why they feel empty inside. Metropolitan Nectarius rightly said it - these are just excuses with which we refuse God's table. Thanks for the reminder.

You're right, Stoyane, and it's exactly like that here in Tarnovo - "I don't have time, sewing, my 5-year-old son wants us to play"... and then we wonder why it's hard for us. Metropolitan Nectarius said it well that these are just excuses. And what do you do to not miss the meal?
