September 8, 2026 · 1 min read

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Thessaliotides and Fanariofarsalon and celebrates on August 15, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The second great feast of the Monastery is on September 8. Since 1939 it has been recognized as a preserved historical monument. It is one of the monasteries that stand out. The landscape, its architecture, its history make the Holy Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti a pilgrimage center.

The Orthodoxy Agency ( ope.gr ) traveled to the top of Agrafo and presents you a tribute to the holy monastery that hangs like an eagle's nest above the village of Karitsa.

The name "Pelekiti" really does fit — carved right into the rock like that. Never knew about this one hanging over Karitsa, looks like it could blow away in a strong wind. Might show the video to my wife; we’ve talked about a quiet monastery trip one of these summers.

The way it’s literally carved into the rock above Karitsa really does make it look like an eagle’s nest – that “Pelekiti” name fits perfectly. Never heard of it before but the video makes me want to see it in person one day. Thanks for the piece.
