The mural painting of the Virgin of Eleusis is, from the year 1763, painted by Hierodeacon Athanasios from Crete and is the only icon in which the Virgin Mary is depicted with three eyes, after the miracle that was performed. Click here or on the image to go to content

I read that the icon was painted in 1763 by the hierodeacon Athanasius of Crete and that it is the only one where the Virgin has three eyes after the miracle. It's really special. Does anyone know exactly what this miracle was?

I remember reading about that same icon years ago. The three eyes after the miracle part is what always stuck with me, but I’ve never found the exact story of what happened either. Does anyone here know the details?
