Kotyaiou Dionysios: The Church lives in a continuous presenttranslated

With a High Priestly Vesper held on the evening of Wednesday, August 11, 2026, the religious events continued in Corfu, at the Holy Pilgrimage of Agios Spyridon, to commemorate the supernatural miracle with which the Saint saved Corfu on August 11, 1716. The Most Holy Bishop of Kotiaios, Mr. Dionysios, assistant to the Metropolitan of Italy, officiated, who spoke to the faithful, pointing out a difficult question for everyone: Saint Spyridon lived many centuries before us and his miracle happened 310 years before today. Why gather to remember an event that is not related to our own life? Why should we worship a man who has left the world, asking him to give us something we need?

But things are not like that. We are not mere spectators of an event, but we participate in a story that is our personal story, we live in a present, which is not exhausted in material things. We are also spiritual beings. Each of us has his faith, which he received from his fathers, which is true, which he is called to transmit to the next generations. Our life is not only of this world.

Thank you for citing the words of Bishop Dionysius. I especially liked how he said that we are not just spectators, but that we ourselves are participating in this story. Here in Yaroslavl, too, on the patronal feast of the saint, I often think: why did I come here if everything happened three hundred years ago? And then I remember how last year, after the service, my husband was unexpectedly offered a job on that very day, and you understand that the saint is still nearby.
