Message of the Metropolitan of Messinia Chrysostomos to those successful in Higher Educationtranslated

July 25, 2026 · 1 min read

The message of the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Messinia, Mr. Chrysostomos, to those successful in Higher Education. my dear children,

It is with great joy and pride that I address all of you, those who have succeeded in Higher Education, fulfilling their dreams, their goals and their expectations. As academic citizens, you are now starting a new path that is also laborious but also more responsible because now your studies have reference to man, to society, to the common good, while they generally concern the future and the benefit of our Homeland.

At this moment and throughout your academic course but also during your studies, you should not overlook the decisive role, contribution and help of your parents, your teachers and all those persons who stood by you and supported you. With the confidence of success you should not forget your friends and classmates, not only those who succeeded but also those who did not manage to experience the joy of this success, since the road is not closed for them either but they can look for other ways out with…

It's good to see the bishop reminding the kids not to forget their parents and teachers who helped them get there. That line about studies being for people, society, and the common good instead of just personal gain stuck with me too, same as you both said. In our parish here we tell the graduates pretty much the same thing every year.

Yeah, it's solid advice. My old man drove me to every Saturday revision session when I was sitting my A-levels, and I still feel bad I didn't thank him enough at the time. Do you lot do anything particular in the parish for the ones who didn't get in this round?

Yeah, it's easy to take that parental taxi service for granted until later. In our parish we usually have a quiet coffee after Liturgy for the ones who didn't get their first choice, just so they know the sky isn't falling and can talk about resits or different paths. Did your dad ever get that proper thank-you in the end?
