The Authority of Indictus in the Holy Metropolis of Aetolia and Acarnaniatranslated

With due ecclesiastical splendor and sanctity, the beginning of Indictus (the new ecclesiastical year) as well as the memory of Saint Simeon of Stylitos was celebrated in the Holy Metropolis of Aetolia and Acarnania. The liturgical events began on the afternoon of Monday, August 31, 2026, where the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania, Mr. Damaskinos officiated at the Solemn Vespers at the solemn Church of Saint Symeon of Stylitos, in Magoula Neochorio.

The celebration culminated in the morning of the main day, Tuesday, September 1, 2026. His Eminence presided over the Orthros and the Solemn High Priestly Divine Liturgy, which was held at the Holy Church of Agios Dimitrios in Paleokarya Trichonidos, where the Sacred Chariot of Saint Simeon of Stylitos is kept.

The Reverend Mr. Damascenes preached the divine word, referring to the importance of the day. In his sermon, he emphasized that September 1 is characterized in the tradition of the Church as the "Beginning of Indictus" and marks the beginning of the new ecclesiastical and liturgical year. The relic of St Simeon in the church at Palaiochora Trichonidos must be something special to see. Nice that Metropolitan Damaskinos preached on the real meaning of the Indiction starting the church year – I’d never properly understood where the word came from until now. Thanks for the report.
