Panagia the "Naulochos Protection"translated

August 10, 2026 · 1 min read

Panagia the "Naulochos Protection" is the patroness of sailors and the great embrace of all believers. It adorns the church of Agios Dionysios Areopagitos Piraeus and every Thursday morning, from 6:30-7:30, a Divine Liturgy is held for the workers at the port. The vicar of the church, Fr. Kosmas Risanos, talks to Pemtousia and journalist Dimitris Strumbakos about the icon.

My father worked the docks in Galveston for thirty years, so this hits close to home. Nice to hear they still serve Liturgy at 6:30 on Thursdays right there for the port workers. Fr. Kosmas sounds like a good man keeping that tradition alive.
