September 18: Saint Eumenios, Bishop of Gortyn celebratestranslated

Today, the Church honors the memory of the Martyr Ariadne and Saint Eumenios, bishop of Gortyn, the miracle worker. Ariadne lived under the emperors Hadrian (117-138 AD) and Antoninus Eusebius (138-161 AD). He married the slave of the ruler of the Phrygian city of Promision.

Once her master was celebrating his son's birthday, and he invited the Christian Ariadne to the idol church to celebrate. But Agia refused the invitation. Then, the lord ordered and they tortured her mercilessly, as a result, through various trials, she surrendered her spirit to the Lord.

Saint Eumenios worked with pious zeal for the work of the Church. In fact, she deserved the great honor of receiving the gift of the Priesthood. When the Holy Spirit made him bishop of Gortyn in Crete, his first pursuit was the election of worthy, reverent, able and devout clergy for the shepherding of God's people.

Also, he did not hesitate to go to Rome, to help and support the faithful there with his word, work and miracles. He fell asleep in Thebaid, where he had gone to meet the ascetics of Egypt. His holy relic was buried in his diocese in Crete. The Hierarch was distinguished...
