A small church was left intact by the fire in Rethymnotranslated

August 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The great fire that hit the area of Triopetra in the Municipality of Agios Vassiliou in Rethymno left behind a landscape of total destruction, with thousands of acres of land, forest lands and properties having been given over to the flames. However, amidst the black backdrop of the burnt forest, a small church remains standing and unscathed. Although the fire consumed everything around it, the small church was saved without being damaged, as can be seen in the photo published by neakriti.gr.

Its walls have remained intact, while the surrounding environment has turned to ash, creating an image that shocks those who see the site.

The small church now dominates in a landscape reminiscent of a place of skulls. The contrast between the total destruction of nature and the unscathed little church has become one of the most characteristic moments of the great fire that southern Rethymnon is experiencing.

In any case, the small church is a point of reference in the midst of the destruction, reminding us that even in the most adverse circumstances a symbol of faith and hope can remain alive.

The image is already being recorded as one of the most shocking moments…

It’s still impressive, this little chapel that remains standing in the middle of all this darkness. We can clearly see in the photo that the walls don't even have a trace, while everything around is just ashes. It makes you think.
