The Metropolitan of Rethymno at the Onithe archaeological site and the three-aisled basilica of the Gouledianstranslated

On the morning of Thursday, August 20, 2026, Rev. Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, Mr. Prodromos, with great pleasure, visited the archaeological site at Onithe in Goulediana, where an excavation is being carried out under the supervision of the Director of the Excavation, Mr. Nikolaos Psaroudakis, Doctor of Archaeology, and his team.

At the same time, His Holiness visited the site of the three-aisled basilica of the Gouledians, which is chronologically placed in the 5th century after Christ.

His Eminence expressed his admiration both for the three-aisled basilica, which he visited for the first time, and for the excavation that continues to this day at the archaeological site at the Onithe site, and congratulated the Director of the Excavation and his entire staff.

At the same time, he emphasized the need to proceed and strengthen both the excavation and the highlighting of the three-aisled basilica of the Gouledians, as decades have passed since the start of the excavation and highlighting of this important religious monument of our country.

Interestingly, the 5th century basilica has still not been fully restored, although excavations have been going on for decades. Well done Bishop Prodromos for coming to see Onite and Gulediana in person. Thanks to Nikolaos Psaroudakis for his work, let them continue to excavate what is still left there.
