Lemnos: 87th anniversary of deadly fire and memorytranslated

The Holy Diocese of Lemnos and Agios Efstratios, with respect to the memory of the victims of the deadly fire of September 9, 1939 and with the aim of highlighting historical memory against oblivion, paid the due tribute again this year, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, in the Holy Chapel of the Birth of the Virgin, in the Market of Myrina, with the performance of the Orthros and Theia Liturgy for the repose of the souls of our 58 fellow residents, who, due to a sudden fire that broke out, during a film screening, at this point, a full 87 years ago, lost their lives in a violent way, plunging the inhabitants of the island into mourning, causing unspeakable sadness and irreparably marking pre-war Greece. After the end of the Divine Liturgy, in which some of the relatives of the victims and several believers participated praying and deeply moved, as well as the President of the Pallimnian Fund Mrs. Fotini Melatou, the Reverend Pastor Mr.

Hierotheos, supported by the Priests and the Deacon, delivered a memorial prayer, before the cenotaph of all, remembering by name all the victims of that tragic event.

Πάντα με στεναχωρεί αυτή η ιστορία. Θυμάμαι που μου έλεγε ο παππούς μου για την πυρκαγιά στον κινηματογράφο της Αγοράς, έλεγε ότι όλο το νησί ήταν μαύρο εκείνες τις μέρες. Καλό που η Μητρόπολη συνεχίζει να κάνει τη δέηση και να διαβάζει όλα τα ονόματα, δεν πρέπει να ξεχαστούν.
