Holy Metropolis of Ierapytni: The Parable of Royal Weddingstranslated

September 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Ecumenical Patriarchate HOLY METROPOLIS

HIERAPYTNIS AND SITEIA WRITTEN SUNDAY SERMON OF MATTHEW

The parable of royal weddings

(September 6, 2026) My beloveds, in today's Gospel passage, we heard Jesus tell the parable of the royal weddings, saying the following: "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who married his son. And he sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the weddings, but they did not want to come. Again he sent other servants, saying: "say to the guests: Behold, I have prepared my meal, my bulls and herds have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the weddings." But they did not care and left, one for his own field and another for his trade. And the rest, after they caught his servants, cursed them and killed them."

Jesus likened the Kingdom of Heaven to royal weddings, because just as in weddings there is joy and happiness, so in the Kingdom of Heaven there will be constant joy and happiness. The King who organizes the marriages of his son is God; and his son is Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom of the Church.

This parable always makes me think how easily we say "now I don't have time, I have work to do" like those who went to the field or trade. And then I wonder if I'll be one of those who gets in with the right clothes or if I'll be left out. Thank you for the sermon, Diocese of Ierapytni.

The parable always cracks me up when it says that the guests went out into the field and into the trade. Every morning I find myself saying "now I have a shift, then the kid, then the cooking" and procrastinating. The worst part is the last part with the clothing – I remember last year at the St. Helens festival I was left without a suitable outfit and felt embarrassed. We have to be more careful.

This parable touches me every time. Just like those who went into the field or trade, so do I: “now it’s a route around the city, then I’ll take my daughter to university, then I’ll fix the old carburetor in the garage” - and again I put it off. And it’s generally scary to think about clothes at a wedding, because I often wear what I came back from fishing in. Thanks for the sermon.
