August 11: Commemoration of the miracle of Saint Spyridon against the Agarinestranslated

Today the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Martyrs Euplos deacon (†304), Gaius, Gaianus, Zenon, Makarios, Markus and Neophytos and we celebrate the miracle of Saint Spyridon, bishop Trimythoundos, against the Agarines. The rescue of Corfu from the Turkish threat, during July-August 1716 AD, proves the faith of the people of Corfu, as well as the constant presence of the ecumenical Hierarch, Spyridon Trimythoundos, born of the Holy Mother of Cyprus, who lived in the 3rd century in Asssia and then in Tremetousia in Mesaoria, as Bishop of Palaifata Church of Cyprus.

On July 8, 1716, the Turks landed in Corfu, and managed to capture several fortresses. Their attacks continue for a whole month.

God's people were constantly interceding. Indeed, on August 9, a terrible storm breaks out on the island. Panic then arose among the invaders. In fact, the news spread that many soldiers saw Saint Spyridon, in the form of an old Hierarch, coming out of his Church threatening them with a lit torch.
