The husband is a drunkard. What should I do?translated

September 29, 2026 · 1 min read

Reader question:

Good afternoon! My husband goes on a binge once a month for 2-3 weeks, once every two months. Doesn't work. He drinks his money away. He's not bad, but even when sober he's lazy. When he drinks, he doesn’t give up, but being with the whole family during his drinking period becomes unbearable. We are not married. He is baptized, but does not go to church. There is no more moral strength. There were thoughts of getting a divorce. But I feel sorry for him. And he does not spare his family. What should I do?

Olga

Priest's answer:

Archpriest Andrey EFANOV

Hello!

Dear Olga, no one can, should or has the right to tell you what you should do. You must make this decision yourself.

You feel sorry for your spouse. This should be the starting point when deciding on the future of your marriage.

Formally, alcoholism can be a sufficient reason for divorce. But this is if you look at the situation formally. But if you look at what is happening from the position of love, then questions arise.

I hope that you loved and still love your husband. And his illness traumatizes you not only because during the period of drinking he becomes unbearable, but also because he destroys himself. If this is so, then it is worth fighting for his life and for yours...

My wife’s cousin went through something almost identical — her husband would disappear for weeks at a time, same cycle. She finally told him the kids and her would move out if he didn’t get into a program and stick with it. He did, and it’s been three years sober now. Olga, you’re right that pity alone isn’t enough; he has to see the real cost or nothing changes. Praying you find the strength to draw that line.
