My nephew died under mysterious circumstances. They didn’t hold a funeral service, they prayed at home. I know from hearsay that on September 11th you can submit a memorial service to the church. Is this true?

September 11th is the day of the Beheading of John the Baptist. By following the link you can read about this holiday and why the day on which the Prophet John was executed is considered a holiday. This day has nothing to do with suicide.

In the Church, suicides are never remembered - neither at the Divine Liturgy, nor at litias and memorial services.

According to church canons, “offering and prayer” for suicides are prohibited (Timothy 14). The reason is that suicides deliberately cut themselves off from communication with God and arbitrarily took their own lives, which a person has no right to do. To make a decision, you need to have complete information. A person does not have such complete information about the prospects of his life. There is knowledge that everything is in the hand of God and that the Lord will direct the path of man and He knows when it is best for a person to complete this path. Thanks for the clear answer, Father Andrey. I remember when my mate's brother took his own life years back – we just lit a candle at home and said a quiet prayer ourselves, same as Tamara did. Never knew about that canon from Timothy before, makes sense now.
