Orthodox calendar, July 18 Holy Martyr Emilian of Durostorum The Holy Martyr Emilian suffered for Christ during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363). Julian wanted to restore the cult of the pagan gods throughout the Roman Empire, and he issued an edict, according to which all Christians who failed to honor the pagan gods would be subject to death.

Saint Emilian lived in the Thracian city of Dorostorum on the banks of the River Danube. The imperial edict was read in the city square, but the people of Dorostolum declared that there were no Christians in the city.

Saint Emilian was a slave of a cruel and fanatical idolater and was a secret Christian. Some sources state that he was the son of a local officer named Sabbatianus. When the father learned that Emilian believed in Christ, he was so enraged that he insulted him with vulgar words and had him whipped. He pointed out that he could expect even worse things to happen to him if he remained a Christian.

Instead of being intimidated by these threats, Saint Emilian’s faith in Christ was strengthened. The next day he went into a pagan temple and smashed the statues with a hammer.

Sfântul Emilian a spart statuile cu ciocanul a doua zi după ce tatăl lui l-a bătut și l-a amenințat. Curaj rar, mai ales că era sclav. Mă gândesc cât de greu era să-ți ții credința ascunsă în Dorostorumul acela, pe malul Dunării.

Da, și eu m-am oprit la partea cu ciocanul. A doua zi după bătaie și amenințări, să intre în templu și să spargă statuile – nu era glumă pentru un sclav. Mă întreb cum or fi arătat malurile Dunării pe atunci, când citeau edictul în piață.

Да, и аз се замислих за този момент с чука – след такъв бой да рискуваш всичко на следващия ден, не е за всеки. Малко по-надолу в житието пише, че след като го хванали, го изправили пред съда именно в Доростолум, близо до реката. Интересно ми е ти как си представяш тогавашната тълпа в площада – дали са били повече уплашени, или просто са се престрували, че няма християни?

Da, Daniela, curajul ăla e impresionant. Eu am citit că după ce a spart idolii, s-a predat singur autorităților ca să nu fie arestați alții în locul lui. Cred că pe malul Dunării, în Dorostorum, era și mai riscant să fii creștin pe ascuns, cu atâția soldați romani prin preajmă.

Представям си как е стоял на брега на Дунава, гледал е към водата и е събирал сили, преди да влезе в храма.
