I too remember how my grandmother, Maria, prayed in the evening to the icon of the Mother of God in the corner, with a string of simple woolen rosaries. There was silence in the house, only her murmur and the crackling of the wood in the stove. It's good that such memories are still preserved.

Oh, oh, oh, that reminded me of my grandmother in Košice. Every evening, she sat down next to a small icon of St. Nicholas, whispered the Lord's Prayer and picked up the wooden beads that her father had given her on a pilgrimage. Those quiet moments by the stove were the most beautiful.

And my own grandmother, Eleni, did the same every night in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary. She would cross her hands, whisper the "Our Father" and then say "Our Lady, protect the children." The crackle of the wood stove still comes to mind.

My grandmother prayed the same way every evening in front of her small icon of the Mother of God, fingers moving over the old wooden beads while the stove crackled. Those quiet minutes before bed are what I remember clearest too. Funny how the sound of burning wood stays with you across so many years and countries.

My grandmother Maria did exactly the same thing to me every night, except that she added my grandfather's name at the end. I also remember the crackling of the stove, it gave us a warmth that you couldn't find anywhere else. Where did you grow up, Kostas?

My own grandmother Katerina did the same in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary, except that after the "Our Father" she said "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us". I remember the crackle of the wood stove too, it kept us warm on cold winter nights. Where was Eleni's house, Kostas? In the village or in the city?

Yes, it was similar here in Košice. My grandmother had a small icon of St. Nicholas above her bed, and in the evening she always silently counted wooden beads while we children were already in bed. Her uncle brought her those beads from a pilgrimage to Levoča, I still have them in a drawer at home.

My grandmother, on the other hand, had beads from the pilgrimage to Šaštín and prayed on them every morning before work at the hospital. She kept them until her death, now I have them in the kitchen in a drawer next to the stove. Do you still have them in that drawer?
