Greek PM: Early debt repayment is a national success

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has stressed that reducing public debt is a national duty, in a Facebook post following Monday’s announcement of the early repayment of 13 billion euros in 2026.

“Because when an entire country is in debt, so are its citizens. And when one generation is unable to repay its debts, the burden is passed on to the shoulders of its children. Well, this destructive chain of responsibility is now being broken. Greece is continuously reducing the public debt inherited from the past, faster than any other European country! And with yesterday’s announcement of the early repayment of 13 billion euros in 2026, it is leaving behind the negative distinction of being the most heavily indebted country on our continent,” the Prime Minister stressed.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis also noted “I know that this news may not receive much publicity or be particularly easy to understand. Its significance, however, is invaluable. Because it means greater fiscal freedom for the state. But also lower burdens for citizens – and above all, for our young people. That is why reducing debt was one of the central commitments I made, and I am pleased that the persistent efforts…

It's good that the debt is going down, but I've been wondering if that money coming back earlier will also mean lower taxes for ordinary people, or will it just go into new expenditures. Mitsotakis says that the chain is broken so that the children do not pay, that sounds fair, but here in Serbia I see that debts are just being transferred from generation to generation.
