Greek MFA welcomes Guterres’ announcement of informal expanded meeting to resume Cyprus issue talks

Greece’s Foreign Ministry welcomed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ statements, stressing that he remained firmly committed to the Good Offices Mission entrusted to him by the UN Security Council to seek a comprehensive, fair and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue within the framework of UN parameters.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also welcomed the announcement of an informal expanded meeting aimed at restarting talks on the basis of the agreed framework under UN auspices.

It underlined that Greece, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus and recognising the importance of preserving the momentum built up around the Cyprus issue over the past two years, was ready to contribute constructively to the successful convening of the informal meeting.

The ministry also welcomed all efforts and confidence-building initiatives, describing them as a necessary condition for the resumption of negotiations. It reiterated that Greece’s consistent objective remained a settlement of the Cyprus issue based on the parameters set by the UN Security Council, as well as the reunification of Cyprus.
