Do We Need God in Order to Be Moral?

The question “Do we need God in order to be moral?” is often heard in contemporary public debate. Many atheists, agnostics, and philosophers argue that a person can be just, compassionate, honest, and socially responsible without believing in God. At first glance, this position seems reasonable. There are people without religious faith who do good, defend the weak, show selflessness, and live with consistency.

The Orthodox Church does not deny this reality. It does not teach that every unbeliever is immoral, nor that every believer is automatically morally superior. The Orthodox tradition knows very well that virtue is not identical with an external religious identity. The human person is created “in the image of God,” and for this reason preserves within himself conscience, freedom, the capacity for love, and an inclination toward the good. Yet the Church raises a deeper question: what do we mean when we speak about morality?

If by “morality” we mean a system of rules for social coexistence, then indeed human beings can formulate such rules on the basis of reason, experience, and the need for social peace. But if by “morality” we mean the full transformation of the human…
