On Sunday, July 12, Metropolitan Antonie was enthroned as Metropolitan of Bessarabia during a festive ceremony in Chisinau, Moldova. On the same day, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem celebrated the commemoration of the Holy, Glorious and Chief Apostles Peter and Paul. In North America, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops has designated Sunday, July 26, as Prison Ministry Awareness Sunday, when hundreds of parishes across the jurisdictions will speak about the ministry of the Church to those in prison. Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry, which has served for nearly three decades, will highlight programs such as Storybook Connections, which unites incarcerated parents with their children by sending home picture books together with recordings of a parent reading aloud. A similar ministry unfolds in Romania, where a vestment that covered the relics of St. Demetrius the New is being brought on July 13-14 to prisons across the Archdiocese of Bucharest, bringing spiritual comfort to inmates and to prison staff. The initiative, carried out together with the National Prison Administration, includes the distribution of 7,000 copies of the Akathist of the saint and marks the 252nd anniversary of the translation of his relics to Bucharest. Metropolitan Tikhon, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, is attending the Assembly of the Archdiocese of Canada in Calgary, Alberta, on July 14. Later in the month he is scheduled to preside at the Assembly of the Diocese of the South in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 20 and to attend the FOCA Convention in Broadview Heights, Ohio, on July 25. In Austria, the Monastery of the Protection of the Holy Theotokos and St. Paisios the Athonite in Sankt Andrae am Zicksee celebrated its patronal feast. Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday, July 12, surrounded by clergy and pilgrims who came to honor the beloved Athonite elder. In Albania, the memory of the New Martyr Nicholas was solemnly commemorated in Vithkuq, his birthplace in the region of Korce, and in Berat, where he lived and suffered martyrdom. Metropolitan Anastasios of Korce celebrated the Divine Liturgy in Vithkuq, while Metropolitan Astios of Berat presided at the Church of the Archangel Michael, where numerous pilgrims venerated the precious relic of the saint. In West Africa, with the blessing of Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa, the Metropolis of Accra announced the ordination of two deacons to the holy priesthood. Archdeacon Dimitrios Abegya will be ordained on July 19 at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Saviour in Accra, and Deacon Dionysios Edugyan Abeka on July 26 at the Church of Saints Charalambos and George in Adeiso, a further sign of the steady growth of Orthodox communities in Ghana. In the wider Christian world, Pope Leo XIV encouraged the faithful at his Sunday Angelus on July 12 to make the summer season a time for prayer, silence, and inner rest. The Pope is spending part of July at Castel Gandolfo, the historic papal residence south of Rome. A visit of Pope Leo XIV to Great Britain is considered likely, according to Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain. He recalled that King Charles III paid a state visit to the Vatican last year and suggested that an invitation for the Pope to return the visit would be a natural next step.
