Honoring the Hieromartyr of our Omsk Irtysh regiontranslated

On September 4, the Church celebrates the day of remembrance of the Hieromartyr Alexy, Archbishop of Omsk.

Hieromartyr Archbishop Alexy (Orlov) was born on February 8, 1862 in the family of a Samara clergyman, and graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

That story about him rewriting the slogan on the letter paper made me smile — turning “religion is an instrument of oppression” into “an instrument of consolation” is such a quiet, clever way to keep going. He really lived what he preached, serving every day and staying simple even as archbishop. Thanks for posting this; I didn’t know much about him before.
