It's sad what they did with that replica mosque on the pyre. The archbishops said it well - respect for other people's faith and solidarity are not great wisdom, just ordinary decency. I hope this still sparks something in the people out there.

It's a shame they thought that was a good idea. The archbishops are right, basic respect for someone else's faith isn't rocket science. Hope the Muslim families in the area didn't see it.

I agree, Alexander, decency should be the foundation, not some special virtue. Here in Novi Sad, we had similar nonsense with religious symbols on some dernecs, so afterwards people are surprised that there is no peace. Do you think this conviction of the archbishop will really change anything there in Armagh or will it just be lip service?

I think he will stay more on his words, Jelena, because these kinds of condemnations rarely reach those who light those fires. Here in Novi Sad, at least after some dernekas, ordinary people from the region started to rebel, not just priests. And with them in Armagh, as far as I hear, it's been the same story for years.

Here in Kragujevac, we had those stupid things with the burning of flags at some parties, so afterwards we are all surprised that the neighbors are frowning. I think that the parishes could start something if they connect with the ordinary world from the region, and not just send announcements.

It’s sad to see a miniature mosque on a pyre, as if it could be a normal “tradition”. The archbishops are right, a little respect and politeness are enough, without big speeches. At home in Toulouse we have already had tensions with burned symbols, and it is always the neighbors who toast afterwards.

Parishes should start by contacting people from the area first, and not wait until everything is over and then write announcements. Yes, Juliette, burning a miniature mosque is not a respectable tradition, it looks more like gratuitous provocation. In Marseille we had a similar incident with a religious symbol thrown into a neighborhood fire two years ago, and it mainly created disagreements between neighbors for months. The archbishops did well to speak clearly and briefly, without adding more.

A little common prayer on the ground might help, but only if it is not imposed; otherwise it looks like a play. And what do you think, should we first invite those young people who light those fires to some fishing or chess tournament, to get to know each other outside of that habit?

Yes, that invitation to fishing or chess is a good idea, Milan, because it's easier to get to know each other through such simple things. Here in Niš, something similar happened after some church celebration - guys who used to make noise with the neighbors now sometimes help us with the barbecue. Just so that it is not too organized, so that it does not look like someone is recruiting them. What do you think, would it pass in their area?
