Archimandrite Matthew (Mormyl), whose memory was honored today in the Lavra, was called “regent of all Russia”translated

September 15, 2026 · 1 min read

Until the end of his days, he remained the chief regent and charter director of the Trinity Monastery, and his singing tradition spread throughout all the churches of the Russian Orthodox Church. An entire era in the history of Russian liturgical singing is associated with the name of the priest.

When asked what is most important in choir obedience, Archimandrite Matthew answered:

“I think everyone should sing as if it’s the last time in their life. You come to the service, meet God and sing as if it was the last time. Then it will be touching, then it will be the last “evening sacrifice.”

This is how the priest remained until the end of his days. Even suffering from a serious illness, Archimandrite Matthew continued to teach and conduct rehearsals. On his grave cross behind the altar of the Spiritual Church of the Lavra are carved the words from Psalm 145: “I sing to my God, until I am.”

The Kingdom of Heaven and eternal rest to our dear father!
