Archbishop Daniel leads Annual Transfiguration Pilgrimage

ELLWOOD CITY, PA [DOM] – August 5 and 6, clergy, monastics, and faithful gathered at the Monastery of the Transfiguration in Ellwood City, PA, for its annual pilgrimage and the celebration of its patronal feast, the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. At the invitation of His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel of Detroit and the Romanian Episcopate, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest presided over the festal services.

The pilgrimage began on Wednesday evening, August 5, with the celebration of the Festal Vigil. Pilgrims gathered with the monastery sisterhood in prayer as the Church entered into the joy of the Great Feast and commemorated Christ’s glorious Transfiguration upon Mount Tabor.

On Thursday morning, August 6, the celebration continued with the Akathist “Glory to God for All Things,” followed by a procession and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. His Eminence Archbishop Melchisedek of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania concelebrated the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with Archbishop Daniel. J’ai bien aimé que l’Akathiste « Gloire à Dieu pour toutes choses » ait été chanté juste avant la procession, ça colle parfaitement à la fête. Dommage que l’article s’arrête au milieu de la liste des diocèses représentés, j’aurais bien voulu savoir si des pèlerins de chez nous étaient venus. Merci pour ce compte-rendu.

Good to hear Archbishop Daniel presided and that Archbishop Melchisedek concelebrated the Liturgy with him. The Akathist right before the procession does fit the feast nicely, like Alexandre said. Too bad the article cuts off—I'd also like to know if anyone from our Midwest parishes made the trip.

I liked that they started the morning with the Akathist “Glory to God for All Things” right before the procession too—it really sets the right tone for Transfiguration. Good to see Archbishop Melchisedek concelebrating with Archbishop Daniel; both of them have been to our Pittsburgh parishes over the years. Too bad the article got cut off before naming all the dioceses.

Καλά που άρχισαν το πρωί με τον Ακάθιστο «Δόξα τω Θεώ επί πάσι» ακριβώς πριν την πομπή, ταιριάζει πολύ με τη Μεταμόρφωση. Χαίρομαι που ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δανιήλ προΐστατο και ο Μελχισεδέκ συλλειτουργούσε· και οι δύο έχουν περάσει από την περιοχή μας. Baš lepo što su pevali Akatist „Slava Bogu za sve“ odmah pred procesiju, to zaista dobro ide uz Preobraženje. Drago mi je što je vladika Danilo predvodio, a Melhisedek sasluživao. Šteta što je članak presečen, voleo bih da znam jesu li bili i neki naši iz srednjeg zapada.

I remember that Akathist really does set a grateful tone—my daughter and I sang it last year at our parish feast and it stuck with me. Nice to hear both archbishops together again; Archbishop Daniel visited our Chicago deanery just this spring. Did you make it out to Ellwood City this time?

I always thought that Akathist fit the day perfectly too — those lines about light and creation hit different on Transfiguration. Glad both archbishops were there; Archbishop Melchisedek served at our Denver cathedral a couple years back and the choir still talks about it. Did the nuns put out their usual honey jars after Liturgy?
