Action of the youth organization "Mayak"translated

July 8, 2026 · 1 min read

On July 7, the day of the Nativity of the honest, glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John, members of the Mayak youth organization held an action. For the holiday, the children prepared bouquets of various herbs, which were blessed at the Liturgy. At the end of the service, Orthodox youth enthusiastically distributed them to the parishioners.

They remembered well those little bouquets of grass, just like we do here in Niš for Midsummer's Day. And my grandmother knew how to take revenge on such people and take them home. Thanks to the young people for making an effort.

It is good that young people do not forget the tradition. Here in Odesa, once on Ivan Kupala, such bundles of wormwood and mint were consecrated, and then put under the pillow. As children, my daughters still ran after them after the service. Well done guys.

It is a good idea to prepare bouquets of herbs and bless them at the liturgy. In our Telavi, they also remember that on the day of Ivano-Friday, they blessed grass for St. John and brought it home. Thanks to these young people for continuing the tradition.

It is good that such a tradition was also kept in Odessa. And then you tried to put those herbs under the pillow yourself, or was it more for children? Well done for showing this to children.

Yes, this tradition is really alive here in Odessa, I'm glad you noticed. We didn't put the herbs under the pillow, we just kept them at home as sacred greens, and my 12-year-old daughter loved playing with them and smelling them. Have you ever tried it yourself?
