Advocates warn New Jersey law could criminalize prayer outside abortion clinics

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Aug. 20 signed a bill that criminalizes “interference” with “reproductive” or “gender-affirming” care, a law that opponents say has serious implications for freedom of speech.

The law criminalizes inflicting “emotional harm” against those seeking or providing “reproductive health care services.” It also bans filming and sharing videos within 100 feet of an abortion clinic.

This seems like a huge exaggeration to me. Banning prayer or quietly offering help 100 feet from a clinic and punishable by jail time? Marie Tasy is right that this is very subjective and threatens freedom of speech. We shouldn't accept such "bubble zones" in our country either.

I agree with you, Petra, this subjective "emotional harm" can be interpreted as anything, including a silent rosary in the hand. Here in Olomouc, I wouldn't want such zones either, it's enough if you can pray normally on the sidewalk. What do you think about it, if it would go through the constitutional court in our country?
