July 9/June 26 – appearance of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God.translated

This wonderful image, according to legend, was painted by St. Evangelist Luke. In the 5th century The icon was transferred to Constantinople, to the Blachernae Church, specially built for it. In 1383, seventy years before the destruction of the Byzantine capital by the Turks, St. the icon disappeared from the temple. Surrounded by a radiant radiance, she appeared in Russia over Lake Ladoga and, miraculously carried from place to place, stopped near the city of Tikhvin.

“On the great Lake Ladoga, fishermen cast their nets. Suddenly an unusual radiant light shone around them. Looking up to the sky, they saw that an icon of the Mother of God with the Eternal Infant of God was walking through the air above the water in Her left hand. The icon was bathed in light from all sides, like sunlight. The fishermen stopped what they were doing and looked after the icon with surprise and joy, wanting to see: where is it going and where will it stop? But the icon hid from their eyes and appeared 30 miles from the lake, in the place of Smolnovo. A chapel was erected here for her; many sick people received healing from it, but soon the holy icon disappeared invisibly from there. They saw her about two miles from Smolnov, near the village of Vymochenitsa: even here she stood in the air and shone...
