On September 24, the Orthodox Church celebrates the transfer of the relics of the founders of the famous Valaam Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, St. Sergius and Herman of Valaam.

Little information about the lives of the saints has survived to this day. According to one version, they were Greek monks and settled on the island of Valaam in 1329 (according to another version, this happened earlier - in the 10th century).

It is believed that they originally settled on the Holy Island, because... A Swedish atlas has been preserved, in which on the map of Valaam it is called Vanho Valamo - Old Valaam, and a cross is indicated on this island.

Founded by the Monks Sergius and Herman, the Valaam Monastery became a real center of Orthodoxy in the harsh northern region, primarily for the local residents - the Karelians. However, people also came to the monastery from other regions of Russia.

The Monks Sergius and Herman reposed in about 1353.
