A few things about Church Music in the City (1860-1913)translated

Renowned musicians of the City often complain about Ecclesiastical Truth, about the limitation of the chanting in City Churches, often to only two people[1], as well as about the "untrained" children's voices in the Patriarchal Church[2], which apparently prevailed at that time.

This had as a consequence the acoustic effect of "smelling the ears of the churchgoers"[3]. There are even mentions of appointments of people to chanting positions without having the appropriate qualifications[4].

There are also many complaints about the ignorant and bad-mouthed singers in the City, who sing alone, without any choir, in such a way that one cannot understand what is being sung and in a "singing and hypnotic style", and who with their gestures and ridiculous grimaces "distort the chants with ignorance and cacophony"[5]. These protests towards the singers are also expressed through the local press, which hosts similar "voices of discontent" in its columns[6]. The criticism most often concerns the singers who are considered the main responsible[7], and not the church itself...
