The history of the Russian Church is inseparable from the history of the Russian state. It is not without reason that among the saints glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church are the great noble princes: Vladimir, who baptized Rus', Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy and others. It is not for nothing that in the akathist to the Venerable Sergius, abbot of Radonezh and the wonderworker of all Russia, the holy ascetic is called “a commander given to Russia,” “a luminous luminary in the Orthodox Russian state.” The bright luminaries of the Russian Orthodox Church are such ascetics as St. Theophan the Recluse, St. Seraphim of Sarov, Righteous John of Kronstadt, St. Patriarch Tikhon and many others.
