The memory of the Council of the New Martyrs of Jasenovac (1941-1944) is celebrated by the Russian Orthodox Church on September 13.

Jasenovac is the largest concentration camp (and system of camps) on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia (ISC), created by the Ustasha (Croatian fascists) in 1941, 60 km from Zagreb.

In this concentration camp, according to various estimates, over 700,000 people were tortured and killed - mostly Serbs, as well as Jews and Gypsies.

Today Jasenovac is a symbol of the suffering of the Serbian people during the Second World War, often called "the largest Serbian city underground."

Among other victims of Jasenovac, the new martyrs of Jasenovac stand out - Orthodox Serbs who died in this concentration camp, incl. for fidelity to the Orthodox faith.

Initially, the Council of the New Martyrs of Jasenovac was glorified at the Council of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and later the names of the New Martyrs of Jasenovac were also included in the month book of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Let us recall that the world's first church in honor of the holy new martyrs of Jasenovac is being built in the village of Medzhuvode, located in the vicinity of Mount Kozara in the Republika Srpska.
